If you were that family - thank you so much.
Here is what Ruth and I have decided to do with your very generous gift: we want to use the things as a new way to encourage the children to read more. We are going to print up our own money - we’re going to call it a ‘teca’. children will earn a teca for every two books they read. We will have a finite number of tecas so the children will have to ‘bank’ their money each week. So they will each have a ‘bank’ book to keep track of their deposits.
Once a month we will open the ‘Puedo Leer’ Pulperia (the local name for a small corner store) and sell the school supplies for tecas. However, as their ‘money’ will be in the bank, the children will need to write checks to cover their purchases.
The children will be learning to earn and spend their own money while also gaining insight into banking.
We will be encouraging more reading this way.
