Puedo Leer celebrated its 7th Anniversary with a big party and lots of fun activities last Saturday here in Granada. Children created their own books and writings, had fun with sack races, drew chalk drawings on the sidewalk, and the day culminated with the crowning of Miss Puedo Leer, one of our members and an avid reader, Andrea Hunter, 8 years old.
In addition to the festivities and yummy refreshments for all, we had a surprise visitor. Frank Remkiewicz and his wife Sylvia were here visiting Granada and learned about our library through a mutual friend. Frank is a famous children’s’ book illustrator, most well known for his very popular Froggy series. We introduced Frank to the children and he was kind enough to draw an original Froggy sketch for us on the spot. We were all very happy and honored to welcome Frank and Sylvia to our library in Granada.
Although we are officially celebrating our 7th birthday here, the library really started 8 years ago when two of its founders were invited to participate in a Saturday workshop for 1st grade public school teachers. During that time we worked with teachers on the importance of reading aloud to young children, how to make reading fun, and other strategies to help foster a love of reading. At the end of the workshop, the teachers expressed their desire to implement these new practices in their classrooms, but alas, had no books or access to books! Among us (Carol, Donna, Helen) we had already collected about 100 books which were in our individual houses and informally being loaned to neighborhood children. So, we agreed to lend these teachers a few books every week which they could rotate among their classes. That mobile program has continued to this day, and is of course, much expanded. A year later, we opened our first official lending library in the front room of a friend’s house.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PUEDO LEER!
