This year I celebrate my 70th birthday and to help me meet this milestone, Darrell Bushnell, organized a hotdog barbecue for Saturday noon at the library.
The library was packed with children - about three dozen or more, who spent time in the morning making me wonderful birthday cards. Rafael, a neighbor and supporter of the library organized the card making and the singing of Feliz Cumpleanos. Darrell and the library staff cooked and organized the loading of the hotdogs with chopped onions (not many children chose these), ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. These were very long hotdogs ( about 10 inches each) with the required matching long buns. Delicious.
I provided cupcakes for one and all and we lit 70 candles - not an easy task in this the windy, kite flying season of Nicaragua. However, eventually all were lit. The fun part was blowing them all out especially since it seemed at least a dozen of them were the kind that throw off sparkles and keep relighting themselves. This was a great novelty to all, even the adults who had never seen that kind before.
It was a wonderful, hectic time but we were all home before one o’clock - less than an hour to cook and devour 50 hotdogs and 50 cupcakes!! Amazing.
Thank you so much Darrell.
